Key treatments for keeping your mouth healthy

Key treatments for keeping your mouth healthy

As you may know, National Smile Month is underway, a UK initiative that works to raise awareness about oral health and shares positive messages about developing and maintaining a healthy mouth.

To play our part in spreading awareness, we’ve written this handy blog focusing on three key treatments offered by dentists and orthodontists that will help to maintain your teeth, gums and smile and play and important role in preserving your long-term oral health.

Dental Check-ups

Regular dental check-ups are important as they give your dentist the opportunity to keep an eye on the health of your teeth and gums. Check-ups offer a vital opportunity for dental issues to be identified before they become more serious, and even conditions such as tooth decay and gum disease can be prevented if symptoms are spotted early and a course of treatment is followed.

Hygienist Appointments

The foundation of a great smile is, of course, strong and healthy teeth and gums, so a regular visit to a hygienist is vital to achieving and maintaining a good level of oral health. During a hygiene appointment your teeth will be thoroughly inspected for any problems such as pain or bleeding, and plaque (the sticky layer of bacteria which is constantly forming on your teeth) will be removed.

Extractions

In some cases, a tooth that has become too badly decayed or damaged will need to be removed by your dentist. This is an essential treatment because it will prevent the spread of infection, help to save other teeth and safeguard against issues with jaw pain and chewing. The procedure includes numbing the effected area with general anaesthetic before easing the tooth from its socket and cleaning the affected area.

Start young!

Preventive dentistry starts at a young age and can certainly help to prevent future issues. To familiarise youngsters with our surgery, Dentalia offer a free initial consultation for kids up to the age of eight when a parent joins the practice, including a tooth brushing lesson and a free kids tooth brush! We also visit local schools to perform Oral Education sessions for pupils and staff.
